Integrating with Hangzhou's Local Culture

In 1881, when Dr. Main went to China, the Opium War had just ended 20 years before. His medical career started with clear hostility, but his enthusiasm, humor, optimism, heartfelt care and respect for patients made him quickly accepted by the city of Hangzhou.

"Dr. Maine's alertness, kindness and loyalty in the last 8 years is one of the reasons why the Chinese are friendly to foreigners. The Chinese are as susceptible to personality influence as other nations."

~Isabella Bird, The Yangtze Valley and Beyond,1898

Dr. Main once bowed to a little patient in the aisle when he was inspecting the ward. His waist was bent at a standard 90 degrees. This scene has touched countless people, and now it has been re-engraved into a statue, standing permanently in front of the SAHZU.
