In 1881, Dr. Main went to China as a medical missionary with a belief in universal values and kindness. He brought the latest medical concepts and technologies from the frontier of modern civilization and impacted China until now. He established many hospitals in China including the Hospital of Universal Benevolence (also called the Guangji Hospital), which became the frontier of medical development at that time. Nationalist movements like the Boxer Rebellion and the Revolution of 1911 didn’t stop him from dedicating himself to his medical work in China. Today, people still appreciate his medical contribution to China.
